Scientists at Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS have determined the optimal process conditions for making a composite material based on affordable titanium and ferroboron alloy powders using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). The resulting material promises to extend the life of heavy duty cutting tools, like those used in the woodworking industry. The research was published in the high-impact International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Materials.

Research engineer Ivan Polyakov from Tomsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is developing software for the automatic analysis of a large number of microstructure images obtained using metallographic and electron microscopes. With a user-friendly interface, a neural network created and trained specifically for the purposes, and a bunch of original algorithms, scientists hope to gain a streamlined access to material property data, such as porosity, grain size, and phase composition.

Scientists at Tomsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are developing optimal compositions and technology for producing oxide-nitride ceramics (SiAlON) via SHS nitriding. Being able to filter out various inclusions from metal melts, such products are in high demand in the metallurgy industry. The research is supported by the Russian Science Foundation (project No. 24-79-00117).

Scientists at Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS have developed a technology for producing fine inorganic pigments in three colors – blue, green, and khaki. The iron triad-based pigments produced via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) are non-toxic and highly durable. The entire process takes minutes and does not require expensive equipment. The findings have been published in the first-quartile journal Ceramics International.

Scientists at Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS, in cooperation with colleagues from Beijing University of Technology, have calculated the optimal operating parameters for a cycloidal rotary engine. Using advanced numerical techniques, they pinpointed the most effective engine operation mode, maximizing efficiency with minimum of fuel consumption. These findings were published in the Energy journal.

Anatoly Maznoy – Deputy Director for Science at Tomsk Scientific Center of SB RAS – spoke at the USC on physical sciences, presenting a report on the modification of powder and granular materials by applying a rare-earth metal (REM) coatings. This implementation-ready result was achieved through successful collaboration of several scientific divisions of the Tomsk Scientific Center.

The results of a comprehensive study conducted at Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS showed mechanisms of the formation of the W–Zr surface alloys. Based on the obtained results, a scheme was proposed describing the formation of the surface alloys (SAs) upon low-energy high-current electron beam (LEHCEB) processing. The study was published in Vacuum.

Scientists from Tomsk State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University and Tomsk Scientific Center of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences published a monograph “Materials with polyfunctional properties based on nanoparticles modified fibers” which presents an advanced technology for manufacturing nanofilters to purify liquid and gas media.

The researchers of the Tomsk Scientific Center produced valuable titanium carbides using the highly exothermic reaction between PET bottles and Ti powder as well as a hydrogen-containing gaseous by-product which can be used as fuel for heat and power units. These carbides are similar in their properties to the reference ones. The research is published in Green Chemical Engineering.

Researchers from the Tomsk Scientific Center SB RAS fabricated core(Al)-shell(Y/Dy) particles by electron beam treatment of Al powder. Such powders containing rare earth metals will make it possible to produce highly oxidation resistant gas burners using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The research was funded by Russian Science Foundation (No. 21-79-10445). The results are reported in Materials Today Communications.

A review of progress and obstacles with high-entropy alloys as structural materials, prepared by scientists Mikhail Slobodyan, Evgeny Pesterev, and Alexey Markov (Tomsk Scientific Centre of SB RAS), has been published in Materials Today Communication (Elsevier BV, Netherlands). A comprehensive 80-page review with over 500 references, covering all major recent works, was published within a month and a half after submission to the journal.

Tomsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the journal s partner.
